Internships

Educating the next generation of museum professionals is an important goal for the Akron Art Museum. The availability of internships varies according to department needs. The internship program is open to college students, recent college graduates and graduate students who majored (or are majoring) in art, art history, art education, library science, communications or marketing. Interns are unpaid volunteers.

Although there are no fixed starting or ending dates, internships typically run for the length of a semester.

Fall (September - November); application deadline: July 15
Spring (February - April); application deadline: December 15
Summer (June - August); application deadline: March 31

Art and Education

Internships are available in curatorial affairs, education and the library.


Curatorial Affairs
The duties of a curatorial intern might include research on art objects, clerical assistance on existing exhibition projects and art handling. Education
Art education interns might help organize lectures and workshops and provide administrative assistance for the museum's docent and school outreach programs. Art Education, Studio Art, Art History and Arts Management students are welcome to apply. Library
Library interns could help maintain the museum's archives and library databases as well as assist with the cataloging and filing of books and periodicals. Communications and Development

Communications
The communications internship allows the student to work on various public relations, promotion and marketing projects. Interns are exposed to museum publications as well as strategies and methods used to promote a museum and its programs, exhibitions and fundraisers. Duties include writing press releases, editing museum publications, assisting with marketing and advertising projects, compiling press kit materials and distributing promotional materials throughout the community. Development
The development intern may assist the development department on numerous levels, including special events, membership, development and fundraising projects. An intern might prepare aspects of a grant application, work on a variety of duties for a museum fundraiser or help maintain the museum's development/membership database.
