Appraisals & Resources

Considering an appraisal? Click here to find out how to proceed.

The staff of the Akron Art Museum is prohibited from providing appraisals of works of art for insurance or sales purposes. Below is a list of some local firms as well as national organizations that might be of service with appraisal and sale research. The inclusion of organizations and individuals on this list is not an endorsement by the Akron Art Museum but is offered as a courtesy to those seeking information. You may also wish to consult a telephone or internet directory under "Art Galleries," "Art Dealers and Consultants," "Appraisers" and "Auctioneers."

Akron Art Museum members are eligible for a "Consult-a-Curator" service. This permits them to meet with a member of the museum's curatorial staff to explore basic identification issues with regard to a work in their private collection. Please email the membership department or call at 330.376.9186 x225 to learn more about the benefits of membership in the Akron Art Museum.

Donations and Sales of Art to the Museum

The museum's collection, which focuses on fine art made from 1850 to the present, has grown primarily through generous donations of art. If you are interested in presenting artwork for consideration, please send a letter or e-mail with your current contact information (phone and e-mail) to Barbara Tannenbaum, director of curatorial affairs, Akron Art Museum, One South High, Akron, Ohio, 44308. To expedite your inquiry, please indicate the specifications of the work (artist name, title of work, date, medium and dimensions) and include an image for preview (this can be a snapshot). Please state whether the artwork is being offered as a possible donation or for purchase.

Artist Review Procedure

Our curatorial team periodically reviews materials from artists who are interested in showing their work at the museum. Please submit a brief letter of interest, resume and 20-25 representative images (slides, snapshots, JPGs on CD, DVDs or website links) to Barbara Tannenbaum, director of curatorial affairs, Akron Art Museum, One South High, Akron, Ohio, 44308. Do not send original artworks. If you would like your materials returned, please include a self-addressed, stamped envelope with sufficient postage. We receive a large number of proposals, so allow two to three months for the review process. We will respond to you as soon as your review is complete.
